Where I'm coming from: I'm a backend developer who hasn't worked much with HTML and never got into front end design. I wanted to breach the barrier with a book that would provide me with what I needed to know to write semantically rich (x)html and style it without needing to become a guru.

This book does that and more.

The authors are professors but their tone is anything but dry. They're friendly but keep the content of each chapter rich with info, humor and advice on how to make use of it right away rather than wait to see some grand picture. The first half of the book introduces HTML but not as a grammar lesson. Rather it's always in the context of the kind of content you want to get out there and what the right tool (i.e.: tag) for the job is. The second half of the book explains how to style this content without any graphics intensive understanding. They show tableless one column and two column layouts and explain the various pitfalls beginners may have when attempting to set these up. There are also troubleshooting techniques explained (html and css validating, lurid palette to reveal what the divs in your document are actually doing...).

The book also lives up to the "standardista" claim. There are constant explanations of standards when it comes to using lists, tables (for tabular data), <strong> vs. <em>'s, <link> vs. @import and a host of other confusing road forks are covered in plain english with an eye toward the practical but standard compliant approach.

The companion site is excellent. Practically every example is shown there, so one can always look and compare to see that he or she is getting to where the authors want him to get.

I feel very enriched by the material and less nervous about tackling more advanced books on the subject of web design and web content.

i have nothing bad to say about the seller or the product this book was very helpful and step by step in HTML and CSS. The book also has a website that helps you with all of the components you will need in order to build a site. i was also happy about the price because my bookstore at school is very expensive.
great book
This book is the best introduction to modern web site design I have yet come across. The authors are teachers and their focus is on understanding how HTML and CSS work together and why one should follow w3c standards when building a site. The result is a book that doesn't try to tell you everything you might want to know about web design, but will instead provide you with a solid foundation to build on.

If you are new to web design, or have only worked with WYSIWYG web software before, this won't be the only book you need on your shelf, but reading it first will make it much easier to understand all the others.
I have been involved in webdesign for over 16 years now and I will have to say this book is GREAT! It will walk you through the basics and easily get you on the way to more advanced programming languages.

I have always wanted to design web sites but never had the time to go on courses. Then I found this book. Not only is it written in everyday language, it is easy to follow, has excellent example and allows you to see your work as you progress, it also has excellent and easy to access on-line support every step of the way. I felt comfortable with the chapters, how they were organised and it was like having a tutor standing right there beside you.

It teaches XHTML emphasizing standards that will allow any website you build to be available to all browsers and includes information on how to make your website easy for those who use audio or other types of aides. You learn how to make clean, clear and well structured websites and all in XHTML with style sheets.

A chapter on how to look for an ISP to host your site as well as recommendations on software, either free or at a relatively low cost as extremely helpful.

I recommend this title for anyone who wants to build their own websites without the cost of purchasing expensive proprietary software. Become a Web Standardista today.
This is really a great book. I had been studying HTML and CSS from some other books for about six months before launching into this one, but the difference in quality is like night and day. I do believe that studying an easier and more basic book has helped me to get a lot more out of this book, but whether this is your first HTML/CSS book or the one that soon follows, this is a superior book (I can't imagine there is a better one out there) and I highly recommend it.

HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions is written in clear and easily understood language (easily understood for what it is, of course!). It is a step-by-step guide which will in the end give the aspirant a real foundation in how to design a website. The homework assignments are meaningful and in the end you produce a sample website whose principles are readily transferable to the kind of skills one needs to make his or her own personal website.

Having an extremely basic and limited knowledge of HTML/CSS before reading this book, I have had a series of "aha!" moments where I understand not only the dry theory (what was covered in other books), but the practical why you do things the way the author's suggest inn addition to the necessary nuts and bolts theory. This is an invaluable approach which takes the reader way beyond the usual "do as I say" format to understanding why you do certain things and why you don't do others. In the end you are able to think for yourself when you design a website and not just follow a formula or set of instructions.

I am making steady, and relatively painless progress thanks to the HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions book. While the same topics are covered in many similar books, they are not, IMHO, covered as well, as clearly, or as comprehensively, as they are here.

Hats off to the authors for a five-star job!
