High school junior Eris Miller thinks she’s having a bad day when her roommate’s boyfriend catches her stepping out of the shower wearing nothing but a towel. Then she gets abducted by scaly six-armed aliens with a strange fondness for the color blue, and her day suddenly gets a whole lot worse.

Trapped on a spaceship bound for the slave markets of Sirius B, Eris fears she’ll never see her home again. But then fate whisks her away from her reptilian captors and into the arms of Varrin, a fast-talking space pirate who promises to deliver her safely back to Earth. He claims to have her best interests at heart, but Eris soon discovers that her charming rescuer has a hidden agenda.

As they race across the galaxy, outrunning a villainous figure from Varrin’s past, Eris begins to realize that their relationship is putting her planet, her life and her heart in imminent danger. She knows that trusting Varrin could prove deadly … but what other choice does she have?

Imminent Danger And How to Fly Straight into It edition by Michelle Proulx Linda Schneidereit Children eBooks

Reading this book I was reminded of both Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" and Harry Harrison's lesser-known "Star Smashers Of The Galaxy Rangers", but Proulx has her own voice that lifts Imminent Danger above the level of mere pastiche.

Eris is a fairly ordinary high school student who is suddenly thrust into a galactic adventure. Kidnapped by one alien race, stolen by another, sold into slavery, rescued, betrayed, rescued again, and always one hairbreadth escape away from certain disintegration, she reacts with delightful pluck and aplomb. The other characters, chief among them the dashing and cheerfully amoral space pirate Varrin, are fully fleshed and well executed. The dialogue is witty, the action fast and furious, the universe just detailed enough to seem real without slowing the plot with mounds of description.

Although this is listed as a YA book, and the main character is a high school girl, I enjoyed it immensely, and would recommend it highly to all ages.

Imminent Danger And How to Fly Straight into It edition by Michelle Proulx Linda Schneidereit Children eBooks Reviews

Don't let the fact this is a YA book deter you, Ms. Proulx has created an admirable world for even adults to step into, supported by good pacing and some of the most enjoyable dialogue I've read in years.
Now, this is no Tolkien, Larsson, Rowling, or even Adams (Douglas), but it's an enjoyable and completely fun first book in a series!
As I wrote this review, I admit I struggled a bit. Points I want to make come across like criticism, and that's far from my intention. Ms. Proulx has created a world with just enough technology mentioned to make it believable, just enough description to let your mind paint the picture, and just enough action to keep you interested.
There are some weaknesses - the main character seems alternately awkward and the next moment speaking her mind when you're thinking "shut up!". Of course, she IS a 17 year old girl so maybe that's accurate. The different species we encounter are quickly stereotyped en masse, but again understandable. There is character development in the main operators, but sometimes it feels a bit too fast.
However, don't let any of this detract you from picking it up! Yes, the ending scenes made me groan with a sense of Deja-Twilight series, but ultimately I don't love or hate a book based on complexity, big words, or expansiveness of the world created. The Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece, but it's also a slog to read.
What Ms. Proulx has done is created a universe that comes across light and airy, with luxury and crime... just like the real world. Not bogged down by description, and moving quickly this book meets the one major criteria I set --- Do I Want to Keep Reading!
And for me, that was an absolute YES. With stacks of half-read books around my house that simply couldn't keep my attention, Imminent Danger... was one of those that I was searching for time to read "Just one more chapter...". It's a page turner, a fun romp through the galaxy, and I now consider myself a fan and anxiously await the sequel!
When I first started to read this book, I sensed a similarity between it and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but with one major difference. That difference being that I actually enjoyed this book. Don’t get me wrong, Hitchhikers is a good book, and I usually enjoy ‘English’ humor, by not so much with Hitchhikers…but I digress.
This story is about Eris, a human teenage girl that gets abducted by some really nasty aliens. Through a strange series of events, she finds herself being taken captive multiple times. Along with a fellow prisoner (a short, hairy alien/monkey hybrid looking thing), she finds herself held captive and entirely captivated by the space criminal Varrin…an outcast from his society with an intersting background.
When I got into this story, I was a bit worried it would end up being a ‘space romance’, as there is clearly chemistry between Eris and Varrin, but I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The characters are very well written, the storyline is fun, if not a bit predictable, but not to a level of allowing the reader to lose interest. On the contrary; I’ve read a lot of books, and sort of knew what was going to happen, but I didn’t care. I still wanted to read it. The book is that good.
The level of detail and development of the universe and all it’s strange denizens is well done. Eris is a strong female character, even if she may not know that about herself. The supporting characters fit well within the storyline and the storyline has just enough twists and turns to make you want more. Because of this well-written book, I have purchased the second in the series and look forward to giving it a read. I highly recommend this book.
4.5 of 5 Stars (which rounds to 5)
