Angus is frustrated. King Tyr has confined him to Hellsbreath and he doesn’t know why. Embril went with the patrol to the Angst temple to safeguard The Tiger’s Eye, but she has failed—or worse, she has betrayed him. Either way, the nexus has been disturbed and Hellsbreath is in danger—and it’s his fault. Commander Garret won’t let him go after her, so all he can do is wait for Hobart and Ortis to return. But when they do…

Angst draws upon several elements from the first three books as it ties things together and brings the series to a close. As such, readers will have a richer experience if they begin with first book (The Tiger’s Eye, which is currently free) and progress through the rest of the series in order.

Note The story continues with the Aftermath series, the first three books of which are essentially Book 5-A, 5-B, and 5-C of the Angus the Mage series.

I usually don't write reviews like this but I am absolutely apoplectic about how this book ended. It is by far one of the worst endings ever for an otherwise good series. This book is the worst one in the series by far. In fact the ending is so bad I can't believe the same author wrote the rest of the series.
SPOILERS BELOW

The story picks up basically where the last one left off but not with Angus. In fact Angus is only in about 25% or less of the whole book the first Angus POV isn't until 35% of the way through and then it switches POV again before he does anything. It feels like the author started to dislike the main character, his POV is almost useless in this book. Almost all of the plot development takes place in alternate pov's, and when you switch POV's all it is, is a rehash of what just happened in the last scene. A large portion of the plot lines not directly related to Angus were, while interesting in their own way, were utterly useless. For example it was interesting to find out exactly how the king used and controlled Argyle, but the plot thread never resolves Grayle ends up free and as queen with control of the king but then the thread kind of just stops with no further info, no real closure. All of the plot threads in this book are like this. The book ends with Angus trapped in a lake of lava trying to decide if he should die and save everyone or live and kill everyone or join with the tiger's eye and be trapped but still kind of alive, Hobart is still in the "'tween" wanting to disband his banner, Gieorge's status and if he will recover is mostly ignored, And Ortis is off to parts unknown to find his people. Then we jump straight to the epilogue with Embril as a grandmother telling her grandson Angus's story with little to no new facts and no closure. Then it ends with her saying she failed Angus, and joining with the tiger's eye herself where she hears Angus's voice.... seriously? I read 4 books to get to that!! *facepalm*.

The good news is that the author responded to this review (you can read the comment link below if you like) and informed me that he plans to continue the story in a new series (or single book) tentatively called “Aftermath” that will continue the story and hopefully bring closure to all the plot lines left in the air after Angst. While the thought of a continuation of other story lines is nice I still am left feeling jaded about my favorite character’s fate joined with the tiger’s eye *sigh* but I will give the next series a chance considering how good I thought the first few books of this series were.

I have enjoyed these four books greatly. They have kept me interested so much that I couldn't put them down once I started reading them.
